Defence crew commended for siev 36 rescue mission in Sri Lanka
LAWRENCE, Kan. – A Navy C-130J Hercules aircraft and a Royal Canadian Air Force F/A-18 Hornet and two Royal Canadian Navy P-3 Orion helicopters rescued 22 hostages from a hostage situation in Sri Lanka.
The rescue operation ended around 9:30 p.m. Monday when the helicopters successfully landed at a base in Barawat, the base commander said. Two military personnel were also involved in the rescue. The group of hostages were holding an American family, including an American infant, who was about eight months old.
"During that brief, intense incident, one of the hostages managed to escape his captors by flying to Sri Lanka," said Captain David Harkins of the Canadian Navy.
Sri Lankan authorities have released 16 American citizens and six Sri Lankan officials. Six hostages were subsequently released, bringing the total number to 30.
The American family was picked up at the time by a Sri Lankan military helicopter and then taken to a hangar to receive medical attention.
Sri Lankan air force personnel then escorted the children to a commercial flight in Sri Lanka.
The Australian navy has deployed two C-130J Hercules aircraft for the rescue mission as part of the Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Air Force rescue efforts in support of the U.S. military.
